Coon Rapids Athletic Association The Coon Rapids Athletic Association (CRAA) is a nonprofit corporation organized in 1964 to develop recreational activities for the youth of the Coon Rapids area. It is governed by a Board of Directors which meets monthly. An election of officers is held at the Annual Meeting each May. Parents become members, with full voting privileges, when any youth registers for any program sponsored by the Association. All CRAA members are volunteers. It is one of the largest all-volunteer athletic associations in the State of Minnesota. CRAA programs are conducted by a Vice President, who serves on the Board of Directors and who has direct charge of the particular sport. The Vice President selects directors, coaches, and officials. All CRAA members are volunteers, usually parents of the participants. This is an important principle of CRAA and is part of the Articles of Incorporation. It not only permits registration fees to be held to a minimum, but also allows a unique opportunity for parents to be with their children as coaches and officials of the athletic team. The Board of Directors works with the Coon Rapids City Council, City staff, the Community Education Department of Anoka-Hennepin School District No. 11 and Community School directors. The CRAA receives no direct support from tax money, but utilizes the City’s park facilities for all their recreational programs. Through a Joint Powers Agreement, the CRAA leases space from the City for storage of equipment. The CRAA has built a concession building at Sand Creek Park for use during their activities. Recreational programs offered by CRAA include girls’ and boys’ slow pitch softball, boys’ lacrosse, football, girls’ and boys’ basketball, and wrestling.
